Everyone should already know the magnesium hydroxide: it is the basis of the product sold in pharmacies like milk of Magnesia Phillips. It is a super cheap and versatile product: it acts as antacid and laxative; Relieves heartburn, poor digestion and constipation. What many people do not know is that it is also a very efficient natural deodorant!
What are the functions of the milk of magnesia?
- Because it is an alkaline substance, milk of magnesia is widely used as an antacid, neutralizing the hyperacidity of the stomach and reducing the sensation of burning.
- It has laxative properties: in reaction with the hydrochloric acid (HCl) of gastric juice, magnesium chloride (MgCl2), a hygroscopic substance, that is capable of absorbing moisture, is produced besides water, which lubricates the walls of the intestine and intensifies peristaltic movements, eliminating constipation.
- Due to its astringent character, milk of magnesia is widely used as a reducer of skin oils. It also acts as antiseptic, soothing acne.
It is also common the use of milk of magnesia in the manufacture of primer, a special type of pre-makeup that greatly assists in the attachment of bases and compact powders.
Milk of Magnesia as Deodorant
In addition to all the above benefits, milk of magnesia is an excellent substitute for industrialized deodorants since it is able to neutralize the carboxylic acids that make up the sweat, responsible for the unpleasant odors of perspiration of the armpits and feet.

Antiperspirants and Deodorants
Deodorants and antiperspirants are not the same things These two chemicals have been created for radically different purposes and work differently when applied to the skin.
Deodorants can not make you stop sweating. Instead, they look at the bacteria that feed on your sweat. Usually, deodorants have alcohol or other ingredients that contribute to making your armpits become inhospitable environments for bacterial colonies. They may also contain bactericides (such as Triclosan) that kill organisms before they have time to digest their fluids.
Antiperspirants, on the other hand, are classified as drugs by the FDA when combined with deodorants. Antiperspirants contain high levels of aluminum chloride, which causes dermatitis (itching and irritated skin). Aluminum chloride compounds are the most effective antiperspirant agents on the market today. They blend into a sweat to create a layer of gel that clogs the duct of the sweat gland, in addition to causing them to contract. When more pores are closed, the less you will sweat. The process is temporary, of course – one hour the blockage comes out along with peeling of the skin – although the residence time of the antiperspirant effect varies from person to person.
Other active ingredients include parabens and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which act as preservatives, masking fragrances, moisturizing emollient oils, emulsifying agents and talcum powder to reduce friction.
Too much aluminum in your body can be fatal, since it can detonate your kidneys. That is why the FDA has, in the last decade, labeled antiperspirants with warnings against its use by people with kidney problems. Other potential irritants include zirconium and propylene glycol, both common ingredients in antiperspirants.
This does not mean that the moderate and daily use of antiperspirants will do you some harm. But if you have one of these vulnerabilities (sensitivity to aluminum, weakened kidneys), it is a good tone to lower the dose.
And in this case, it has a very effective, natural and inexpensive solution, to use milk of magnesia as the deodorant.
